1. Recognize your mistake. Recognizing and accepting that you are experiencing guilt is the first step in coping with it. Don't try to hide it or push your emotions away.
2. Recognize the origin of your guilt. Consider why and for what you are feeling guilty. You can begin to take steps to deal with your guilt after you identify its source.
3. Examine twisted ideas. Try to question and reinterpret any incorrect or unreasonable notions that may be the source of your guilt. Do you genuinely believe what you are thinking, or are you just making assumptions?
4. Try to make apologies. If your guilt is a result of anything you did, strive, if you can, to make amends. Do all you can to repair the damage, offer an apology, or both.
5. Be kind to yourself. Keep in mind that regret is a natural emotion experienced by all people and that everyone makes mistakes. Let yourself to forget about it and go on.
6. Let go of it. It's time to let go and move on once you've done everything you can to atone, forgive, and confront your delusional notions.
